99 Top Bucket List Ideas

From the humble shopping list to the well-organised ‘to-do’ list, there’s hardly a single person I know who can function without one or more lists in their lives. Keeping on top of a busy agenda and remaining sane at the end of the day takes organisation – so whether you use an app or the back of an envelope, lists are here to stay.

But a Bucket List is a little different. Rather than being a catalogue to things to do today, this week, month or year, it has a qualities of aspiration, hope, challenge and achievement.

There is little formal evidence as to the root of the expression ‘bucket list’. Anecdotally it comes from the kicking away of a bucket when someone is hung! But there are many other theories as to the origin of the idiom. The term has been used as a film title, the title of a song and a TV series. The comedy The Bucket List, came out in 2007 and starred Milton Friedman and Jack Nicholson on their road trip. Nelly Furtado sang “Bucket List” in 2013 and the second series of An Idiot Abroad was title The Bucket List.

On a happier note, today’s fashion for bucket lists has spawned a whole industry offering ‘experiences’, many focusing on travel to out of the way places and definitely including some long-haul flights, a bit of danger and immersion in some other cultures. All great for broadening the mind and it never hurt to have a dream.
